The University is tied with Northwestern for 11th place in undergraduate programs among the nation’s best national universities.

Washington University in St. Louis — consistently ranked among America’s 20 best national universities — is now ranked 12th in the best value category titled “Great schools, great prices,” an increase of two spots over last year, according to new undergraduate rankings released by U.S. News & World Report magazine. The university is tied with Northwestern University for 11th place in undergraduate programs among the nation’s best national universities.

The Washington University School of Medicine and the George Warren Brown School of Social Work are both ranked second in the nation, according to new graduate and professional rankings released April 2 by U.S. News & World Report magazine. The School of Medicine was tied for second in 2003 and has placed in the top 10 every year since the annual rankings began in 1987. It has ranked first in student selectivity — a measurement of student quality based on Medical College Admission Test scores, undergraduate grade-point average and the proportion of applicants selected — every year since 1998.

Washington University’s ascent from streetcar college to elite ranks of the nation’s finest research universities was the subject of a front page feature in the Dec. 22 issue of The New York Times. The article notes that WUSTL recently pierced the top 10 circle of U.S. News and World Report rankings, humbling several Ivy League institutions along the way. “Such an ascent is what almost every university strives for, but none have come close to matching Washington’s success,” states the New York Times.
