Brown School student teaches staff, faculty how to be veteran allies
Brown School student Jesse Herman is working to make the university a more welcoming place for veterans. An Army veteran, he is a facilitator for the Office of Military & Veteran Services’ new Veteran Ally training program.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth to speak at Veterans Day Celebration
U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Army veteran and double amputee, and Robert A. McDonald, former secretary of veterans affairs, will take part in the university’s Veterans Day celebration at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in Edison Theatre. It’s more good news for Washington University veteran groups, which also successfully lobbied the university to hire its first veteran student services advisor.
Veteran in Brown School helps other vets help themselves
Veteran and Brown School student James Petersen is organizing the biggest Veterans Day event in recent university history featuring panel of combat veterans and an address by U.S. Sen. Claire. McCaskill. After serving in Iraq’s infamous Abu Ghraib prison, Petersen suffered from PTSD. The therapy he received inspired him to earn his master in social work so he can help other veterans.
Pereira’s mission: The connection between community service, veteran health
Former Army Sgt. Mike Pereira lost a little bit of himself after a friend and fellow veteran shot himself. But Pereira found that, through service, veterans could find purpose, community and healing. Today, he serves dying veterans at hospice and, as a University College student at Washington University in St. Louis, conducts rigorous research about veterans who volunteer in their communities.
Student veterans continue to serve their country by helping their community
Veteran Ian Smith barely graduated from high school. Today, he is earning his degree in global leadership and management in University College in Arts & Sciences and is leading a team of engineers to develop low-cost prosthetics using 3D printers.
