Team develops wireless, dissolvable sensors to monitor brain

A team of neurosurgeons and engineers has developed wireless brain sensors that monitor intracranial pressure and temperature and then are absorbed by the body. The team, from the School of Medicine and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, believes the sensors potentially could be used to monitor patients with traumatic brain injuries.

Conflict among honeybee genes supports theory of altruism

A team of researchers has provided strong support for the long-standing — but hotly debated — evolutionary theory of kin selection, which suggests that altruistic behavior occurs as a way to pass genes to the next generation. David Queller, of Arts & Sciences, was part of the team that investigated kin selection by examining worker honeybees’ social behavior.

Sam Fox School lecture series begins

Artist Trevor Paglen deploys photography, sculpture, engineering and investigative journalism to document drones, satellites, fiber-optic cables and other “hidden” systems. Paglen will launch the Sam Fox School’s spring Public Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, in Steinberg Hall Auditorium.

Efficiency update: New STL-based office supplier offers significant cost savings

Washington University has selected St. Louis-based Office Essentials as its new office supplies vendor. Office Essentials will begin accepting university orders Monday, Feb. 1. Alan Kuebler, associate vice chancellor for Resource Management, estimates the university could save $500,000 per year with the move.
