Pluto: A cosmic lava lamp

Using computer models, New Horizons team members have been able to determine the depth of the nitrogen ice layer within Pluto’s distinctive “heart” feature and how fast that ice is flowing. Arts & Sciences’ William McKinnon led the study.

How to stop dividing cancer cells in their tracks

Researchers from Washington University and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital made a discovery that uncovers the molecular logic of how dividing cells are stopped in their tracks. The team zeroed in on a protein whose job is to stop or slow cell division.

Itching for no reason? Immune system may be at fault

People who suffer itching with no clear cause may have previously unrecognized immune system defects. In a small study, researchers from the Center for the Study of Itch at the School of Medicine identified irregularities that may prompt the urge to scratch.

Obituary: Barry Weller, library technical assistant, 50

Barry Weller, who served Washington University library patrons for nearly 25 years, and who, as B. Weller, made an indelible mark as an actor of remarkable versatility, died of a heart attack May 28 in St. Louis. He was 50.

Obituary: Martha Ozawa, Brown School professor emerita, 82

Martha N. Ozawa, former Bettie Bofinger Brown Distinguished Professor of Social Policy and professor emerita at the Brown School, died May 3 at her home in St. Louis. She was 82.

The Campus Kitchen at Washington University seeks volunteers during the summer to help prepare meals for the hungry. Cooking shifts are 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays at the First Community Church on Wydown Boulevard.
