MLA Lecture Series focuses on motion’s impact

This year, University College’s MLA Lecture Series, held each Saturday in February, will focus on the impact of motion on our physical and social worlds. Doug Wiens, in Arts & Sciences, kicks off the series with a virtual lecture, “Glaciers, Ice Sheets and Sea Level Rise,” drawn from his research on Antarctica, at 11 a.m. Feb. 5.

Visiting Hurst Professor francine j. harris, of the University of Houston, will give a virtual reading of her work. She was awarded the 2020 National Book Critics Circle Award for her third poetry collection, “Here is the Sweet Hand.”

Las Cafeteras visits

1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28

Las Cafeteras, which filters folk, spoken word and traditional Mexican music and dance through the group’s roots in East Los Angeles, will present a campus workshop Friday, Jan. 28, and perform at The Sheldon Jan. 29. The workshop highlights music’s role in social movements. The Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity is sponsoring the events.
