Supercomputing project tackles protein folding

Greg Bowman, at the School of Medicine, is leading one of the largest crowd-sourced computational biology projects in the world. Called Folding@home, it’s aimed at understanding protein folding and its role in health and disease.

Mitochondrial fusion supports cell division

New research from Gary Patti’s laboratory in Arts & Sciences shows that when cells divide rapidly, their mitochondria are fused together. In this configuration, the cell is able to more efficiently use oxygen for energy.

Wang named Loewentheil Distinguished Professor

Ting Wang (center) has been named the Sanford C. and Karen P. Loewentheil Distinguished Professor of Medicine. The Loewentheils are providing support to help advance precision medicine.

Hauft to lead College & Graduate School of Art

Amy Hauft, of the University of Texas at Austin, has been appointed director of the College & Graduate School of Art in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. Sculptor Jack Risley also will join the faculty.

WashU Expert on ways to stop e-cig epidemic

Tobacco control experts would welcome a crackdown on e-cigarette commercials on television and radio, said Douglas Luke, professor at the Brown School. But he said an ad ban should be part of a broader plan to curb the vaping epidemic among America’s youth.

The fifth cohort of the university’s Professional Leadership Academy & Network (PLAN) has been selected. PLAN is a yearlong professional development program, overseen by the Office of the Provost, intended to cultivate future leaders at the university.

Research Wire

Hong Chen, at the McKelvey School of Engineering and at the School of Medicine, received a $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering for work toward a broader understanding of her research combining intranasal drug delivery and focused ultrasound.
