St. Louis online rental market reflects neighborhood stigma

Analyzing more than 94,000 Craigslist rental housing ads in St. Louis from 2017-2020, Ariela Schachter, in Arts & Sciences, found trends that reflect the implicit bias landlords and renters have about neighborhoods based on their racial and socioeconomic makeup.

No. 2 women’s soccer returns to Sweet 16

The WashU women’s soccer team returns to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Championship tournament, this time facing Calvin University at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Francis Olympic Field. Head Coach Jim Conlon said this squad is unlike any he has coached before. 

Students work together to recover food waste

At WashU, two student groups are doing their part to reduce food waste in St. Louis. They have joined forces to broaden their impact and distribute more healthy fresh food to local shelters and food banks.

Shantanu Chakrabartty, at the McKelvey School of Engineering, will lead the Neuromorphic Integrated Circuits Education network, which is looking at the brain as a model for hardware and algorithms that make the most of computational performance with the least amount of power.

Washington University is the newest member of the Coalition for Transformational Education, a group that focuses on preparing students for life after college.

Salvatore P. Sutera, former engineering dean, 90

Salvatore P. Sutera, former dean of the McKelvey School of Engineering and the Spencer T. Olin Emeritus Professor, died Nov. 7 in St. Louis. He was 90. A memorial Mass will be held Nov. 25 at Immacolata Catholic Parish in Richmond Heights, Mo.
