Oxygen levels link to ancient explosion of life

A team of researchers, including from Arts & Sciences, found that oxygen levels appear to increase at about the same time as a three-fold increase in biodiversity during the Ordovician Period, according to a study in Nature Geoscience.

Obituary: Eric P. Newman, WashU alumnus, benefactor, 106

St. Louis businessman, scholar and philanthropist Eric P. Newman — an alumnus and major benefactor to Washington University — died Nov. 15 at his home in Clayton. He was 106 years old.

Edward McPherson, of Arts & Sciences, takes a look at American life in different cities in his book “The History of the Future.” McPherson discusses his work in a Q&A with University Libraries, ahead of a book talk at 4:30 p.m. today in Olin Library.

Several members of Arts & Sciences participated in the annual American Literary Translators Association conference, held in October in Minneapolis. Ignacio Infante, associate professor, spoke on a panel at the event, as did a number of graduate students.
