The Freedom Suits Memorial in downtown St. Louis, dedicated this summer, honors enslaved men and women who sued for their freedom before the Civil War. Members of the WashU community contributed to the decades-long effort.

Toriola named Danforth WashU Physician Scholar

Adetunji T. Toriola, MD, PhD (center), a professor of surgery, has been named a William H. Danforth Washington University Physician Scholar. He is the second person named as part of the School of Medicine’s Physician-Scientist Investigators Initiative.

Trio of publications explains regional mosquito patterns

Where humans dominate the landscape, so do non-native mosquitos, according to recent studies published by Tyson Research Center scientists Kim Medley and Katie Westby. Urbanization is a key factor behind the tiger mosquito’s rise in the St. Louis region.

Faculty members Song Hu (left) and Yong Wang are teaming up on research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to find quantitative biomarkers for clinical pain management. In addition, Hu received a $2.9 million NIH grant to use photoacoustic microscopy to study abnormal oxygen metabolism in injured neonatal brains.

Brown School social work PhD student Woodjerry Louis has been selected to participate in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s prestigious Health Policy Research Scholars program, a four-year national leadership development initiative.
