The FBI File

The FBI amassed a 1,884-page file on James Baldwin — the largest on any African American artist during the era of Civil Rights. James Maxwell’s “James Baldwin The FBI File” includes more than 100 original FBI records, which track Baldwin’s professional and personal life, as well as the author’s efforts to spy on J. Edgar Hoover.

The book includes an introduction by Maxwell as well as notes on the files offering historical context.
