Association of Black Students

In the fall of 1968, members of the Association of Black Collegians occupied Brookings Hall for eight days. The sit-in would permanently change Washington University.

Hip hop artist and actor Common will give the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the Association of Black Students, at 7 p.m. Monday, March 29, in Graham Chapel. This event was originally scheduled to take place April 6.

It is being called “A Celebration of Women and Diversity at Washington University,” but it is much more than a celebration. Beginning Monday, April 5 through Saturday, April 10, a unique set of events — mostly free and open to the public — will be offered that demonstrate the talent and vitality that women and minorities bring to the university, the region, the nation and the world.

African-American entrepreneur Earl G. “Butch” Graves, Jr. will deliver the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 5th in Graham Chapel. The lecture, titled “The Media History and Portrayal of Black America,” is free and open to the public. Graves is the chief operating officer and president of the Earl G. Graves Publishing Company, publisher of Black Enterprise magazine.

He joined the magazine in 1988 as the vice president of advertising and marketing and has worked to transform the company into a multimedia conglomerate.

In 1992, Mae Jemison climbed aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour and became the first woman of color to go into space. On Wed., Oct. 26, she will deliver the Black Arts & Sciences Festival lecture for the Assembly Series at 11 a.m. in Graham Chapel.

ShangeNtozake Shange, author of the revolutionary “choreopoem” for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, will deliver the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture for the Assembly Series at 4 p.m. Thurs., April 8th in Graham Chapel.
