Working with budding local tech companies can be good for researchers, good for startups and good for the local economy — even if, in the end, the researcher decides to head back to the lab. Here’s the story of what one PhD student is learning about his options.

Lihong Wang, Ph.D., became the first Gene K. Beare Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering in a Nov. 29 ceremony.

Jonathan S. Turner, Ph.D., was named the Barbara J. and Jerome R. Cox, Jr. Professor of Computer Science in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The professorship was established by Jerome Cox, Sc.D., and his wife, Barbara, to advance the relationship between theory and practice in the design of digital systems. Jerome Cox is a senior faculty member and a former chair in the same department.

Arye Nehorai, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at Washington University, was installed as the Eugene and Martha Lohman Professor on March 7, in a ceremony in Whitaker Hall.

Chancellor Wrighton announced that funds from the alum’s estate will be used to support a future SEAS building, also to be named after Preston Green.

At a tribute dinner on Feb. 27, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton announced an $8 million commitment from the late Preston Green to support the School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) and its Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering.

Yoram Rudy, Ph.D., professor of biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, has been installed as the inaugural Fred Saigh Distinguished Professor of Engineering. The professorship is the gift of the Saigh Foundation.
