SIFT (Shaw Institute for Field Training) and TERF (Tyson Environmental Research Fellowships) — a collaboration between WUSTL’s Tyson Research Center and the Missouri Botanical Gardens’ Shaw Nature Reserve — gives high school students authentic engagement in environmental research and prepares them for careers in biology and other sciences.
Using cognitive science to improve STEM teaching is conference focus, Sept. 27-28
Developing new and innovative approaches for the
teaching of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is the
primary goal of an interdisciplinary conference to be held Sept. 27-28
at the Charles F. Knight Executive Education & Conference Center at
Washington University in St. Louis.
Teaching graduate and postdoctoral students to be successful teachers
Washington University in St. Louis has joined a
national experiment to develop a new generation of college science and
engineering faculty, one equipped to excel in the classroom as well as
the lab. Founded in 2003 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and
Learning (CIRTL), the mission of the CIRTL network of 25 research universities is to prepare science graduate students
to be as bold and creative in the classroom as they are in their
programs of research.
Math, science focus of two-week residential summer camp at WUSTL for St. Louis-area middle schoolers
Washington University is hosting its fourth ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp June 20-July 2 for 48 middle school students from St. Louis City, County and Metro East schools. The free two-week residential camp offers innovative programs to enhance middle school students’ science and math knowledge. Former NASA astronaut and camp namesake Bernard A. Harris Jr., MD, will visit the campers from 10 a.m. to noon June 30 in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall.
