The Weston Career Center at Olin Business School is not sitting on the sideline, waiting for the economy to recover, campus recruiting to pick up and unemployment to drop. Instead, the career center team has gone on the offensive to help students find jobs in non-traditional markets and help them learn how to market themselves and network in new ways. 

The American College of Bankruptcy and Washington University in St. Louis School of Law will present a lecture by James H.M. Sprayregen, JD, one of the nation’s top restructuring attorneys, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, in the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom of Anheuser-Busch Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Greece is experiencing a financial and social crisis of epic proportions. The newest Nobel laureate in economics and a colleague at Washington University in St. Louis co-founded a blog to share ideas to rescue Greece’s economy. They’ve published a plan to overhaul Greek government and society. Will these economists become modern day Greek heros and save the country where Aristotle first pondered economics?

Lingxiu Dong, PhD, professor of operations and manufacturing management at Olin Business School, is passionate about making a difference in real-world business practices. Her research seeks solutions to problems managers face when juggling all the links in complicated supply chains.

Recent calls to cut Social Security benefits are grounded in misinformation and misunderstanding, says Merton C. Bernstein, LLB, the Walter D. Coles Professor Emeritus at Washington University in St. Louis School of Law. “Cutting the program will lead to undiminished deficits, more poverty, less purchasing power, less business income and more unemployment,” he says.

A team of distinguished judges read through dozens of entries from leading business publications around the world to name the first recipients of the Olin Corporate Strategy Prize. The competition’s goal is to expand awareness of the importance of strategic change in maintaining vital and competitive businesses. $10,000 will be awarded to the winning authors and students and faculty use their reporting as case studies.

The second annual Leaders in Business Summit sponsored by Deloitte and the Olin Business School was held at Washington University in St. Louis Sept. 28. Sustainability, energy policy, corporate social responsibility and management strategies to navigate volatile times were among the topics on the day-long agenda which included a presentation by St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President and CEO James Bullard and an address by renowned pollster John Zogby.

The School of Law is hosting a screening and discussion of the award-winning documentary “Off and Running” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom of Anheuser-Busch Hall. The event is free and open to the public. In “Off and Running,” filmmaker Nicole Opper chronicles the coming-of-age story of Avery, the adopted daughter of white Jewish lesbian parents and sister to two adopted brothers — one mixed-race and one Korean.

An entrepreneur who has helped thousands of people in poverty-stricken countries throughout Africa says she couldn’t have done it without the help of students and professors at Washington University. The Blessing Basket Project bestows its annual World Changer award on WUSTL. Video history and thank you from artisans in Africa included.

Olin Business School’s Executive MBA program was ranked No. 2 worldwide in the Wall Street Journal’s 2010 survey published Sept. 30. The ranking is based on survey data collected on 64 business schools and responses from corporate human resource officers and recent EMBA alumni. Olin’s extensive career services were cited as an advantage of the program designed for professionals with 10 years or more corporate experience.
