Washington University in St. Louis is launching the Quick Start License, a new tool that helps clear the path for faculty and staff to launch startup companies and accelerate the pace of bringing innovations to the marketplace.

The top prize in the 2015 Olin Cup competition was awarded to Love Will Inc., a developer of virtual currency-based financial tools, at an awards ceremony held Jan. 29 at Washington University.

Pharmaceutical companies have largely abandoned the business of discovering and developing antibiotics and our stock of these “miracle drugs” is beginning to shrink. Michael Kinch and his colleagues at Washington University in St. Louis are working to create new models for drug discovery that could replace the failed private enterprise model.

Joseph Jez, PhD, co-director of the plant and microbial biosciences graduate program at Washington University in St. Louis, is one of 15 professors nationwide to receive a $1 million HHMI grant to bring the creativity he has shown in the lab to the undergraduate classroom. He plans to use the grant to establish a two-year program called the Biotech Explorers Pathway that will introduce entering students to both the science and business of biotechnology.

​​​Dedric Carter, PhD, has been appointed to the newly created position of associate provost and associate vice chancellor for innovation and entrepreneurship at Washington University in St. Louis. He has been associate dean for international education and research and professor of the practice in the School of Engineering & Applied Science. The appointment is effective June 1, according to Holden Thorp, PhD, university provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs; and Henry S. Webber, executive vice chancellor for administration.​

David M. Holtzman, MD, and Randall J. Bateman, MD, have been chosen as co-recipients of the Chancellor’s Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Washington University in St. Louis.

Clifford Holekamp oversees the entrepreneurship platform at Olin Business School but is also highly involved in the St. Louis startup scene.

Washington University in St. Louis’ Olin Business School and School of Engineering & Applied Science have announced a partnership with the startup-focused news organization Techli to promote the growing entrepreneurship community in and around St. Louis.

Washington University in St. Louis’ Olin Business School, in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) in Herzliya, Israel, and Onward Israel, is launching an Israel Summer Business Academy, aimed at providing students an opportunity to learn firsthand about business in Israel, one of the most vibrant hubs of entrepreneurship in the world.

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton gave a special address titled “A Vision for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Washington University in St. Louis” March 16 at the Eric P. Newman Education Center. During his presentation, Wrighton emphasized the university’s Plan for Excellence and the goal to “Enhance our global leadership today to benefit the world tomorrow.”
