The United States earns failing grades when it comes to the number of people walking to work and school and the number of walkable communities, finds a new national report. Amy Eyler, associate professor at the Brown School, serves on the advisory panel for the National Walking and Walkable Communities Report Card, released Sept. 14.

School of Medicine employees focus on health
School of Medicine employees were focused on health Feb. 3 with the Health Happening health and wellness fair at the Eric P. Newman Education Center, where more than 40 vendors provided health information and free health screenings. In addition, employees who participated in the Tread the Med “Be a Walk Star” 100-day walking campaign were honored at a reception in the McDonnell Pediatrics Building Atrium.

Between Sept. 28, 2011, and Jan. 5, 2012,
Washington University School of Medicine employees walked to the moon
and back, then around the equator 10 times. That adds up to nearly
1.3 billion steps walked in the 100-day Tread the Med “Be A Walk Star”
walking campaign, sponsored by the School of Medicine Wellness Council
and managed by the Department of Human Resources.
Health Happening wellness fair Oct. 28
Plan to visit this fall’s Health Happening health and wellness fair, titled “Walk this Way.” The fair will be held from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Oct. 28 in the McDonnell Pediatric Research Building atrium. It is open to university faculty, staff and students.
A walk in the park
About 1,500 School of Medicine employees took a walk in Hudlin Park Sept. 28 to kick off Tread the Med, the school’s walking campaign. More than 120 teams and nearly 1,900 employees have registered for the program, which encourages walking 10,000 steps a day.

Lace up your walking shoes – Tread the Med, Washington University School of Medicine’s walking program, launches Sept. 28 in Hudlin Park. “We are launching this program because we want to help our employees get healthier and to encourage a healthy habit like walking,” says Gregg Evans, human resources consultant.
Employee Appreciation Lunch to be held June 3
Washington University School of Medicine faculty and staff are invited to Hudlin Park for the School of Medicine’s Employee Appreciation Lunch June 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s event also will include information about the health aspects of walking.
Health Happening health fair to focus on walking
This fall’s health fair, held from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the McDonnell Pediatric Research Building atrium at the School of Medicine, will include guidance on using a treadmill and proper shoe selection.

Walking, jogging and other forms of regular aerobic exercise may actually ward off the onset of Alzheimer’s disease pathology in the brain, suggests newly published research from Washington University in St. Louis.
