Steven C. Hause, Ph.D., senior scholar in the Humanities at Washington University in St. Louis, has received the Innovative Entrepreneurship Education Course Award from the U.S. Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship for his course, “Economic History and Entrepreneurialism in Modern Western Civilization.”

Mark J. Brostoff will join the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis as associate dean and director of the Weston Career Center effective Jan. 9, 2009. Brostoff is a retired commander in the United States Navy and a WUSTL alumnus with a master’s degree in Health Administration, earned in 1982. He graduated from Alfred University in 1980.

In the weeks leading up to the Oct. 2 vice presidential debate at Washington University in St. Louis, hundreds of people rolled up their sleeves to accommodate both candidates and perhaps the biggest swarm of media to ever descend on the University campus. Here are some fun facts and numbers that indicate the magnitude of the event.

A current student and a recent alumnus from Washington University in St. Louis have been named Rhodes Scholars. They are Aaron F. Mertz, 22, and Leana S. Wen, 23. The two were among 32 U.S. students chosen for graduate study at the University of Oxford in England. Winners of the highly acclaimed award were selected based on high academic achievement, personal integrity, leadership potential and physical vigor.

Weidenbaum, one of the country’s most acclaimed economists and a distinguished Washington University professor for more than 40 years, received the Eliot Society’s highest honor at the 39th annual William Greenleaf Eliot Society dinner on April 26. The event was held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Clayton and included a keynote address by the celebrated Irish singing sensation Ronan Tynan.

The professorship is a gift of the late William H. Matheson, a professor of comparative literature and a member of the Committee on Comparative Literature.

The celebrated writer and essayist’s talk, titled “Metaphor,” will explore the true essence of metaphors and their connection to language and creativity.

Robert E. Hegel, Ph.D., professor of Chinese in Asian and Near Eastern Languages & Literatures in Arts & Sciences, became the first holder of the Liselotte Dieckmann Professorship in Comparative Literature on Feb. 2 at a ceremony in Holmes Lounge.
