William H. Danforth took office as the University’s 13th chancellor, succeeding Thomas H. Eliot. Danforth was professor of medicine and had most recently served as vice chancellor for medical affairs. Today, he is chancellor emeritus and vice chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Alumnus and Trustee Steve Fossett succeeded in his attempt to circumnavigate Earth solo in a balloon. The University served as Mission Control for his flight, as it had for several of his earlier attempts.
