Finances will be less daunting this summer for five University undergraduates pursuing unpaid public service internships in New York, Washington, D.C., and the villages of East Africa.
These students will be the first beneficiaries of a new Public Service Summer Stipend program sponsored by the University’s Richard A. Gephardt Institute for Public Service.
Designed to ease financial burdens for students accepting non-compensated summer internships in the public service arena, the program is open to University freshmen, sophomores and juniors in good academic standing. For more information, go online to www.gephardtinstitute.wustl.edu.
The following students will receive full or partial stipends for 2006:
Anne Marie Brooks, a junior majoring in International and Areas Studies in Arts & Sciences, has accepted an internship at the Office of Refugee Admissions in the Department of State in Washington, D.C.
Elena LaMalfa, a junior majoring in educational studies in Arts & Sciences and operations and human resources in the Olin School of Business, has accepted a public service internship with the Children’s Defense Fund in New York.
Revathi Ravi, a junior majoring in biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, has accepted a public service internship with the Uganda Village Project in the Iganga District of Uganda, East Africa.
Landen Romei, a sophomore majoring in Spanish and International and Area Studies in Arts & Sciences has accepted a public service internship with the North American Congress on Latin America in New York.
Aisha Sabar, a junior majoring in political science and Arabic in Arts & Sciences, has accepted a public service internship with the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.
