Service first, scholarship next

Freshmen Natalie Rufat (top, center) and Cici Coquillette (kneeling, center) paint a mural at Ford Elementary School in St. Louis during the 10th annual Service First event Aug. 30. More than 1,000 first-year students volunteered their time to this annual WUSTL tradition to help paint indoor and outdoor murals and maps, create bulletin boards and prepare classrooms for the new year at 12 St. Louis-area public schools. “I hope this event will serve as the beginning of a lasting commitment to service by our students during their time at Washington University,” says Stephanie Kurtzman, director of the Community Service Office and associate director of the Richard A. Gephardt Institute for Public Service.
