Black Anthology at Edison Theatre Feb. 5 and 6

Student-run show in its 21st year of celebrating black culture

Black Anthology, in its 21st year as a WUSTL student-run performance arts show celebrating black culture, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5 and 6, in Edison Theatre on the Danforth Campus.

This year’s show is titled “Intersection: What Side of History Will You Be On?”

Black Anthology aims to give students a unique voice to address real, pressing issues, including racism, sexism, police brutality, representation of minorities in the media, the black family and relationships.

The show was created in 1989 by Marcia Hayes-Harris as part of the Quest for Success minority programming series.

Early shows featured a collection of pieces by famous African-American writers, poets, musicians and playwrights. Now, the show is an entirely student-written and directed play featuring the talents of more than 30 undergraduate and graduate actors, musicians and dancers from the WUSTL community.

“Our show is performed in the beginning of February as a celebration of Black History Month,” said Arts & Sciences senior Nadia Mann, director of Black Anthology 2010.

“Every year, we discuss issues that affect all of American society, covering themes such as racial discrimination, popular culture, the legacy of slavery, relationships between men and women, interracial relationships, homophobia, generational changes and hate crime,” Mann said. “After the events of this year, these issues have been in the forefront of discussion in our community at WUSTL.”

The cost is $8 with a WUSTL student ID and $10 for general admission. For tickets, contact the Edison Theatre box office at (314) 935-6543.
