George Washington Week on campus celebrates university’s namesake

The annual George Washington Week, sponsored by the sophomore honorary Lock & Chain, continues through Feb. 19.

The week started Monday with horse and buggy rides around the Danforth Campus and birthday cake in the Danforth University Center. Other activities include colonial lunches and dinners, a freshman homecoming party, and the “wigging” of this year’s George and Martha.

“George Washington Week has traditionally served as a time where we honor our namesake’s birthday and unite the Washington University community through several key events throughout the week,” said Lock & Chain member Jasmine Knowles, a sophomore in Arts & Sciences. “This year, we have worked with many student groups in order to provide more events for the student body to attend, in hopes that we are able to increase school spirit and pride.”

“George Washington Week is very important to Lock & Chain because it stresses the importance of giving back to the community; not only the Washington University community but the St. Louis community as well,” Knowles said. “It is our hope that, through our events, we are able to encourage students to remember the legacy of George Washington and to make a difference in our local community.”
