MBA students spend spring break exploring earthquake-ravaged Chilean wine industry

Long before the first earthquake struck Chile in late February, MBA students at the Olin Business School were researching and planning a trip to study the Chilean wine industry.

It’s the culmination of a course called “Global Management Strategy” which requires second year MBAs to choose a global industry for in depth research and plan a tour of the country or region including face-to-face meetings with industry executives.

25 members of the “GMS” course are currently touring wineries in Argentina. They arrive in Santiago, Chile on Sunday, March 14. The Chilean wine industry estimates about 12 percent of the 2009 harvest was lost due to damage caused by the earthquake.

Olin Business students will meet with executives to discuss marketing strategies, exports, large scale vs. boutique wineries and global distribution challenges as well as plans for recovery efforts following the recent earthquakes.

Students are available for interview while traveling or upon their return to Washington University in St. Louis, March 22, 2010.
