Ashley Pearson, a graduate architecture student in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, miters lumber to length for a new shade pavilion in University City’s Heman Park. Located just east of the intersection of Midland Blvd. and Shaftesbury Ave., the pavilion is the centerpiece of a summer design/build class led by Carl Safe, professor of architecture. Participants are gaining hands-on experience in all aspects of the construction process, from meeting with clients and developing proposals to laying foundations, fabricating metal joints and assembling the final structure. For more pictures of the students at work, view the slideshow at right. All photos by David Kilper.
