Ashley Pearson, a graduate architecture student in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, miters lumber to length for a new shade pavilion in University City’s Heman Park. Located just east of the intersection of Midland Blvd. and Shaftesbury Ave., the pavilion is the centerpiece of a summer design/build class led by Carl Safe, professor of architecture. Participants are gaining hands-on experience in all aspects of the construction process, from meeting with clients and developing proposals to laying foundations, fabricating metal joints and assembling the final structure.
