Cancer survivors and caregivers gather Feb. 12

Students from the WUSTL chapter of Relay For Life, the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society, will be hosting a survivor and caregiver social at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, in McMillan Café.

Participants in last year’s Relay For Life, held in the Athletic Complex, pause to observe luminaria, each bearing the name of a person who has battled cancer.

The event was created this year in an effort to connect with survivors and caregivers from campus and the surrounding communities for an afternoon of conversation, camaraderie and celebration.

“The survivor and caregiver social is an event we hope will strengthen our connection to survivors in the community because our organization strives to celebrate their experiences,” says junior Sruti Chivukula, member of the survivorship committee of Relay For Life. “By coming to this social, we hope that survivors and caregivers in our community can take part in the ceremony of Relay For Life in March.”

Those interested in attending, should RSVP by Monday, Feb. 7, to mission.wurelay@gmail.com.

This year’s Relay For Life event will be held from 6 p.m. March 5 to 6 a.m. March 6 at Francis Field.

Relay For Life of Washington University is ranked as one of the Top 10 collegiate events in the nation. The majority of the $1.3 million that has been raised in the event’s eight year history has gone directly to the St. Louis community and has been instrumental in supporting research conducted at the Washington University School of Medicine.
