Sports update Jan. 8: Women’s basketball gets by Chicago in UAA opener

Sophomore forward Melissa Gilkey scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to lead the No. 3 women’s basketball team to a 96-67 victory at the University of Chicago in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams Saturday in the Windy City.

Gilkey, who has led the Bears in scoring in seven of 12 games played, was 8-of-12 from the field and hit all three of her three-point field goal attempts. She also had nine rebounds in the win.

The Bears entered the UAA schedule averaging a conference-best 75.6 points per game. WUSTL took a 54-30 lead to the locker room, shooting 52.5 percent (21-40) from the field and hitting 5-of-8 from three-point range. WUSTL outrebounded Chicago 48-25 for the game, and improved to 11-0 this season when outrebounding their opponents. The Bears are +16.1 in rebounding margin, tops in NCAA Division III.

WUSTL (11-1, 1-0 UAA) continues conference play with a pair of road games this weekend at Emory University Friday, Jan. 11, and at the University of Rochester Sunday, Jan. 13.

Men’s basketball upset in UAA opener at Chicago
The No. 5 men’s basketball team shot a season-low 40.3 percent from the field as the Bears were upset 68-60 by the University of Chicago in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams Saturday in the Windy City.

WUSTL (10-2, 0-1 UAA) continues conference play with a pair of road games this weekend at Emory University Friday, Jan. 11, and at No. 3 University of Rochester Sunday, Jan. 13. (Rochester defeated Emory 89-80 in the UAA opener Saturday in Rochester, N.Y.)

Junior guard Alan Aboona led all scorers with 15 points, while sophomore forward Nick Burt added a career-high 13 points off the bench.

The Bears struggled from the foul line (5-11) and were outrebounded for the second time this season 41-35. The Bears entered the contest leading all NCAA Divisions with a +17.2 rebounding margin.
