Can technology be at once ubiquitous and invisible?
Artist Trevor Paglen deploys photography, sculpture, engineering and investigative journalism to document drones, satellites, fiber-optic cables and other “hidden” systems.
This spring, Paglen is featured in “To See Without Being Seen: Contemporary Art and Drone Warfare,” on view at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. At 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, Paglen will deliver the Bunny and Charles Burson Distinguished Visiting Lecture for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.
The talk — which will launch the the Sam Fox School’s spring Public Lecture Series — is the first of 12 presentations this semester by nationally and internationally known artists, architects, curators and designers.
The series will continue Feb. 8 with Aaron Betsky, dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture at Taliesin, followed by a talk and film screening by filmmaker Peter Yost Feb. 16. Other highlights will include artist Xu Bing (Feb. 24), artist Mark Dion (Feb. 29) and Freund Teaching Fellow Andréa Stanislav (March 23).
All events are free and open to the public and begin at 6:30 p.m. in Steinberg Hall Auditorium, unless otherwise noted. Each will be preceded by a reception at 6 p.m.
In addition, at noon Friday, Jan. 29, architectural historian Claire Zimmerman, coordinator of doctoral studies for the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Planning, will discuss “Arcades of Detroit” as part of the DISCUSSIONS in Architectural History and Theory Series. Presented by the Sam Fox School’s College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design, the talk will take place in Kemp Auditorium, Givens Hall.
