The media are invited to cover this special event kicking off the university’s 150th anniversary year


WHO: The St. Louis community will join Washington University students, faculty, staff and alumni in celebrating the university’s founding 150 years ago.

WHAT: 150th Birthday Party — The event kicks off the university’s 150th anniversary year. The birthday party will reflect what the university is and does, with more than 200 events and activities free & open to all.

WHERE: Brookings Quadrangle and other areas on the Hilltop Campus and the Medical Campus.

WHEN: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. concert, Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003

HIGHLIGHTS: Among the 200 events and activities of interest to young and old are:

  • Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton, aka “Magic Mark,” will take off his chancellor’s hat and put on his chemist’s white lab coat to wow audiences with his chemistry tricks.
  • A highlight for children will be Goldilocks on Trial. Law students will present two performances of the fun mock trial, in which kids from the audience will serve as jurors.
  • Lewis, the world’s first robot photographer, will be on hand to take pictures.
  • The School of Medicine will have hands-on exhibits and demonstrations, a one-day version of its popular Mini-Medical School program, a posture analysis and health screenings. Kids can dress up in scrubs or play “Pin the Organ on the Patient.”
  • A performance by the world-renowned Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra will cap the day at 7 p.m. in Brookings Quadrangle.

MEDIA PARKING/ASSISTANCE:

  • Hilltop Campus: Reserved media parking is available at the south end of Brookings Hall. Take Forsyth Boulevard to Hoyt Drive; take Hoyt to south leg of the circle drive that leads up to Brookings Hall, and a parking attendant will direct you. Please show the attendant a media ID.
  • Medical Campus: Street parking is available on Parkview Place and Euclid Avenue.
  • Media Assistance: Public Affairs staff will be stationed at the Welcome Tents (please refer to accompanying maps) on each campus, and available throughout the day by pager.
