An advocate for mental health

Jerry Naunheim Jr.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter (above and below, seated far left on panel) spoke about her vision for ending the mental health crisis before a packed crowd in Graham Chapel on Feb. 14. A panel discussion featuring local and state representatives of the mental health community followed Carter’s remarks. Carter has been deeply invested in the mental health field for more than three decades, emerging as a driving force for mental health when, during her husband Jimmy Carter’s administration, she became active honorary chair of the President’s Commission on Mental Health, which resulted in passage of the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980. Her most recent book is Within Our Reach: Ending the Mental Health Crisis.
