Football team suffers rare home-opening loss

The football team suffered its first season-opening home loss in 11 years as the Bears dropped a 24-21 decision to Illinois Wesleyan University Sept. 13. Sophomore Brad Duesing finished the game with a season-high 149 yards on six catches and two touchdowns.

The No. 4 volleyball team (12-3) hosted the inaugural Teri Clemens Invitational and went 2-1, defeating No. 2 Trinity University and Baldwin-Wallace College, 3-0. The lone loss came at the hands of No. 1 Juniata College.

The men’s soccer team (3-3-1) earned a 0-0 draw Sept. 21 against Centre College at Francis Field.

The women’s soccer team (6-1-1) extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with wins over Webster University and Aurora University.

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams continued their strong performance Sept. 19 at the Eastern Illinois University Panther Open in Charleston, Ill. The Bears’ men placed second out of eight teams and the women finished fifth out of nine squads.

The men’s tennis team hosted the second annual WU Fall Tennis Invitational at the Tao Tennis Center and at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center. The Bears claimed both doubles events and won three of four singles flights.

The women’s tennis team swept the 2003 WU Fall Invitational, taking home all six individual titles. In doubles action, Laura Greenberg and Erin Fleming won the A Flight with an 8-6 win over teammates and top-seeded Lauren Zwick and Rathi Mani. In singles action, Mani won the A Flight, defeating Zwick 6-4, 1-6, 10-8.
