Pianist Peter Martin to perform for Jazz at Holmes Jan. 26

St. Louis native and New Orleans refugee currently featured in *Goodnight, and Good Luck*

Renowned pianist Peter Martin will perform with drummer Maurice Carnes for Washington University’s Jazz at Holmes series from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26.

Jazz at Holmes features professional jazz musicians from around St. Louis and abroad performing in a relaxed coffeehouse-style setting most Thursday evenings throughout the fall and spring semesters. The series is sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences, the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences, Student Union and WUJazz.

All concerts are free and open to the public and take place in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall, located on the west side of Brookings Quadrangle, near the intersection of Brookings and Hoyt drives.

Martin, who is making his first appearance for Jazz at Holmes, can be seen and heard in George Clooney’s feature film Goodnight, and Good Luck (2005) as pianist with jazz singer Diane Reeves, for whom Martin regularly serves as pianist and musical arranger.

A St. Louis native and graduate of University City High School, Martin has long resided in New Orleans but recently returned to St. Louis, with his wife and their three children, after his 100-year-old home was deluged in the Katrina flooding. Martin was on tour with Reeves in South Africa at the time.

Martin is the son of William Martin, a violist with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and violinist Rose Martin. Though he first trained as a classical pianist, early support by jazz legend Wynton Marsalis led him to an established jazz career. Martin performs widely and has appeared as part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center series — with Marsalis — among other venues.
