Safety drill

Joe Angeles (From left) Rick Baker, University City Fire Department (UCFD) engineer, Paul Landgraf of WUSTL environmental health and safety and Capt. Kevin Wallace of UCFD go over maps outlining the fire lanes on campus. Each year, fire departments from Clayton and University City, in partnership with WUSTL Facilities, drive the fire lanes on the Danforth Campus to ensure emergency vehicles can respond to WUSTL emergencies using campus roadways. Firefighters also train each year on how to operate the university’s bollard system, which prevents unauthorized vehicles from driving onto campus sidewalks but can be lowered for emergency purposes. Also for the first time this year, firefighters tested a newly installed geogrid system, an underground reinforcement system installed to expand the width of the firelanes by four feet under the grass that will support the weight of firefighting equipment.
