Pan Li, PhD, and Junjie Zhang, both trainees in the laboratory of Yoram Rudy, PhD, the Fred Saigh Distinguished Professor of Engineering, received awards for best poster presentations in the 2011 Gordon Research Conference on Cardiac Arrhythmia Mechanisms in Galveston, Texas, Feb. 13-18. Li received first prize for his project, “A Model of the Cardiac Purkinje Action Potential and Calcium Cycling.” Zhang received second prize for his project, “Characterization of Electrophysiologic Substrate in Post-Myocardial Infarction Patients using Noninvasive Electrocardiographic Imaging (ECGI)”. …

Steven E. Petersen, PhD, the James S. McDonnell Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience in Neurology, professor of radiology and of neurobiology and associate professor of neurological surgery, has received a three-year, $1.17 million grant from the James S. McDonnell Foundation’s 21st Century Science Initiative for research titled “Communities and Criticality in Brain Networks Across Development and in ADHD.” …

Jay F. Piccirillo, MD, professor of otolaryngology and of medicine and director of the Doris Duke and Predoctoral Clinical Research Training Programs, has received a three-year, $1.5 million grant from the Defense Medical Research and Development Program of the U.S. Department of Defense for research titled “Investigating the Neurobiology of Tinnitus.” …

Katherine E. Waselkov, graduate student in biology in Arts & Sciences, has received a one-year, $8,780 grant from the National Geographic Society for research titled “An Investigation of the Phylogeographic Origin and Conservation Status of Endemic Amaranthus Species in the Galapagos Islands.” …

David Zar, research associate in computer science and engineering, was featured on Good Morning America Feb. 15 to demonstrate a smartphone application for ultrasound imaging developed by Zar and William D. Richard, PhD, associate professor of computer science and engineering. In February, the application was awarded the 2011 Best Mobile Health Innovation by the Global Mobile Awards during the Mobile World Congress and received FDA approval.
