Creating a more sustainable St. Louis

(From left) Phil Valko, director of the Office of Sustainability; Hank Webber, executive vice chancellor for administration; and Francis Slay, mayor of St. Louis, await the official groundbreaking of the Sustainable Land Lab May 18 in Old North St. Louis. The land lab, a partnership between WUSTL and the City of St. Louis, includes four innovative projects that will transform vacant lots into assets to advance sustainability and community involvement. Winning teams received a two-year land lease and $5,000 to implement their projects, which include a sunflower field, a community chess garden, a restaurant made from a surplus cargo container and more.
