The No. 21 Washington University women’s tennis team upset No. 18 Wheaton College (Ill.), 5-4, at the Oak Brook Racket Club in Oak Brook, Ill., on Saturday, March 1. The win improves Washington University to 3-1 this season, while the Bears handed Wheaton (10-1) its first loss of the year.

The Thunder took two of the three doubles points, but Washington U. was able to take No. 2 doubles, where junior Erin Swaller and freshmen Kaylee Cassady prevailed over Shannon Hale and Brooke Parrish, 8-4.

Trailing 2-1 heading into singles competition, Washington U. won four matches to pick up its first win over a ranked opponent this season. At No. 2 singles freshman Jaclyn Bild defeated Hale, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Freshman Karina Kocemba won 6-3, 6-2, over Parrish, in the No. 3 spot, and sophomore Allison Dender was a 6-3, 6-4, winner over Brittney Dunn in the No. 4 spot.

Wrapping up the win for the Red and Green was freshman Kristin Fleming, who defeated Kayli Edwards, 7-5, 6-0, in No. 6 singles.

Washington University will resume action on Sunday, March 9, when it faces the University of Texas-Tyler, in Hilton Head, S.C., at 1 p.m. The match is the first of four the Bears will play in Hilton Head during their Spring Break trip.
