University’s 1,000th liver transplant recipient is all smiles one year later

Kaidence Oliver, 22 months, shares a smile with William Chapman, M.D., at a party in her honor for being the 1,000th recipient in the University's liver transplant program. Kaidence had a liver transplant one year ago at St. Louis Children's Hospital after being diagnosed in utero with an inherited liver disease. When Kaidence and her family traveled from their home in Redbud, Ark., to the medical center Jan. 17 for her one-year checkup, she was treated to a Dora the Explorer cake, balloons and introduction to what life would be like as a movie star. Every TV station in St. Louis was on hand to capture the event. Kaidence delivered a command performance and delighted the crowd by taking several swipes of icing every time she passed the cake. With Kaidence are her parents and members of the transplant team. From left are her mother, Amber Oliver; Ross Shepherd, M.D.; her father, Matt Oliver; Chapman; and Jeffrey Lowell, M.D.
