English faculty member receives NEH fellowship

Abram C. Van Engen, PhD, assistant professor of English in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, received a 2014 National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship award.

His yearlong fellowship provides time to research and work on a book. The working title is “American Model: John Winthrop’s City on a Hill.” The book is a biography of Winthrop’s 1630 sermon, “A Model of Christian Charity.”

Van Engen also has a forthcoming book, “Sympathetic Puritans: Calvinist Fellow Feeling in Early New England,” to be published in spring 2015.
