Question: Louis Beaumont, after whom Washington University’s Beaumont Pavilion is named, owned a department store that is now part of which major company?

Answer: B) Macy’s. Louis Beaumont opened the May Shoe and Clothing Co., in St. Louis with his brothers and brother-in-law David May in the 1880s. In 2005, it merged with Federated Department Stores (Macy’s). Beaumont Pavilion, built in 1965 in Brookings Quadrangle and the epicenter of our annual Commencement ceremony, is part of that legacy.

Congrats to this week’s winner, Tullia Hamilton, adjunct instructor in University College, who will receive an “I Knew WashU!” luggage tag.
