Obituary: Gibbons, lab technician, 51

Marilyn Gibbons, a lab technician at The Genome Institute, died of cancer on Aug. 3, 2012. She was 51.

Gibbons joined the institute in 1997 and, through the years, she made important contributions to many projects, including the Human Genome Project and cancer sequencing initiatives.

“Marilyn always had a positive attitude and a smile on her face,” says Catrina Fronick, manger of technical services at The Genome Institute.

“She was proud to be part of The Genome Institute and took her work seriously, always giving 100 percent. Marilyn was an amazing, strong, funny and caring mother, wife, friend and co-worker.”

Services were held Aug. 8 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Belleville, Ill.

Gibbons is survived by her husband, Tom; daughter, Kendra; stepsons Adam and Cory; brothers Kenneth, Thomas, Gary and Tony; and sisters Dinna and Angie. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kendra Gibbons Education Fund at St. Teresa Catholic School, 1201 Lebanon Ave., Belleville, IL, 62221.
