Jan. 20 talk focuses on university’s history

“Why Is It Called Washington University?” a presentation and book signing with Candace O’Connor, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the AT&T Foundation Multipurpose Room at the Missouri History Museum, 5700 Lindell Blvd.

O’Connor, who wrote Beginning a Great Work: Washington University in St. Louis, 1853-2003, will talk about how the university got its name.

The university’s first board members wanted to name the school “Eliot Seminary” in honor of Unitarian minister William Greenleaf Eliot. O’Connor will discuss why the university was named for George Washington.

Books will be available for purchase in the Missouri History Museum Shop. For more information, call (314) 746-4599.
