Darrell Hudson, an associate professor at the Brown School, will become director of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity (CRE2) at Washington University in St. Louis, effective July 1. Hudson has served as a CRE2 associate director since July 2022. Hudson also has courtesy appointments with the Department of Psychiatry, at the School of Medicine, and the Department of Sociology, in Arts & Sciences, and he is a faculty scholar with the Institute for Public Health.
CRE2, founded in 2020, brings the research force of Washington University to study how race and ethnicity are integral to the most complex and challenging issues of our time.
Hudson’s career is dedicated to elimination of racial and ethnic inequities in health. His research focuses on how social determinants of health, particularly racism, affect health outcomes. Hudson’s published research has examined racial and ethnic differences in depression, including the effects of socioeconomic position, racial discrimination and coping behaviors on depression. His current work looks at how upward social mobility affects the health and well-being of Black Americans. He is also investigating the integration of mental and physical health.
Gerald Early, the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters in Arts & Sciences, will step down as interim director, effective June 30.
